Maryland Handgun Qualification License course: 4 Hours
The Maryland Handgun Qualification License (HQL) Course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely. This course four hours and includes classroom and range time, learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Students learn rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; cleaning the pistol; and an overview of Maryland firearms law.
You are EXEMPT from the HQL IF you:
Are currently active duty military, or if you are retired military.
Are an active law enforcement officer WITHIN Maryland, or a retired officer WITHIN Maryland, or a FEDERAL officer.
Are a current Licensed Firearms Dealer.
You are EXEMPT from the TRAINING IF you:
Are a veteran of the military (DD214), a former officer WITHIN Maryland, or currently own a REGULATED firearm (handgun prior to 10/1/2013).
Students will receive handouts and a course completion certificate.
This certificate is valid proof of training for both the Virginia CHP
and the Florida CWL.
We are not providing the HQL training at this time. The main reason is that IF you intend on obtaining your
Maryland Wear & Carry permit, once you are approved, you can obtain the HQL for FREE!
Additionally, the 4th Circuit has overturned the Maryland HQL. The mandate will not be released until 12/12/2023.
Maryland does have the right to appeal before 12/5/2023, if they do, the mandate is stayed. Otherwise the HQL will be
DOA as of 12/12/2023.
