What is a Site Location Plan and why do I need one?

Most planning applications need a site location plan which shows the proposed development in its surrounding context and a block plan or site plan which shows the development in more detail. These plans enable the local planning authority (LPA) to identify the land to which the application refers to and should be based on an up-to-date Ordnance Survey map.

For more information on the kind of applications that require these plans please see What is a Block Plan and why do I need one.

This guide specifies the location plan you must submit with your planning application. You can create and buy the plan you need from us and attach this to your online application. If you are posting your application, three copies of your location Plan plus the original are required; we can supply 6 hard copies with each order.

Site Location Plan Requirements

Your site location plan must conform with a fairly rigid set of requirements. If it doesn’t, then your planning application is likely to be rejected, delaying the process and possibly costing you money.
The location plan should indicate the direction of north. It must be drawn to a standard specified metric scale; typically, scales are at 1:1250 or 1:2500 for larger sites. It should also be sized to fit on either A3 or A4 paper.

Should my site location plan be Black and White or Colour?

For planning applications your site location plan can be either Black and White or Colour, we offer both versions.

What scale should my site location plan be for my planning application?

Normally your council will ask for a site location plan at 1:1,250 or 1:2,500 Scale. If your property does not comfortably fit within our preview window at either of these scales please call us on 01856 898 022, we may need to create your site plan on a larger sheet of paper.

What information do I need to include on my site location plan?

Every site location plan submitted as part of a planning application will require a North arrow and a scale to be clearly visible. Our plans include both.

My council have asked for 2 named roads to be shown, what does this mean?

This means that your site location plan must show 2 roads and the names of these must be visible. If you are unsure of exactly the plan you need, please give us a call on 01856 898 022 and we can create your map for you.

Can I mark and annotate my site location plan?

Yes, you can mark your boundaries in red and blue on our plans, and all copies will feature these boundaries.

Can I get this for free?

No, Ordnance Survey site location plans (guaranteed to be acceptable by planning authorities) always attract royalty charges. Free maps such as Google are not suitable due to the level of detail and accuracy they show.

Can I preview my site location plan before ordering?

Yes, of course; we give you a full preview of the site location plan before you purchase. This means you will know exactly what you are going to get before you pay for it.

How many paper copies do I need to submit?

If you are submitting your site location plan by paper copy you may need to supply up to 4 copies. For this reason we offer 6 free paper copies with every order placed with us.
